1974 is easily one of my favorite years for the Dead, but i've mostly only heard the heavy hitters. looking for some recommendations of more obscure shows.

my criteria are a well played and energetic 1st set that doesn't have me diving for the skip button. and a jam-filled, tight and jazzy 2nd set rather than an epic space freak out.

here's what's in my collection: 2/23, 2/24, DP 24(3/24), 5/14, 5/19, 5/21, 5/25, 6/16, 6/18, 6/20, 6/23(SMR excerpt), DP 12(6/26 & 6/28), 7/19, 7/31, DP 31(8/4-6)
DP 7(9/9-11), 9/18, Winterland run

You may want to try http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-30.sbd.weiner.17814.sbeok.shnf

(There are many sources and I can't remember which is the one I have, so i just grabbed the most reviewed version)

It may not meet all of your criteria since its actually a little sleepy at the start, and like Hucker's Roanoke show I would not classify this as one of the classics, especially considering some of the other June shows that immediately precede it. But there's a very good Playin'>UJB>Playin' sandwich here, and a nice Eyes. Very worth having in your collection.

I don't know if I've ever plugged for this show on here, but now is a good opportunity:

Don't know if I can say much, except I think it should be on everybody's list of good 1974 (I won't claim it should be top 5 or anything). The Scarlet Begonias and C > R are outstanding. The Playin > Wharf Rat > Truckin > Playin sandwich lives up to its potential. Definitely check this one out if you are looking for good 1974.

This audience recording is INCREDIBLY good, too - to my ears it's as clear as audiences get, comparable to a soundboard. I think it sounds a lot sweeter than most 1974 soundboards.

1974 is one of my favorite years. Although I couldnt tell you why, I might prefer it to 1973!

I would grab 2/22. It's got a nice Slipknot! Jam intto to Playin' and you'll sleep better knowing you have the entire Winterland run.

5/12 is a rather poorly played performance. But there is some interesting jamming during the second set. Judging from your taste, I think you will get some enjoyment out of having it.

Am I reading your post correctly that you dont own the entire Jai Alai show on 6/23? Only the "Let it Rock" from SMR? If that is true you need to get this show immediately. It's absolutely a top-ten for '74 and some folks will argue it's the best performance of the year!

I like the 7/27 Roanoke show. It's not one of the great ones, but it's got a cool US Blues Jam and it's certainly worth having.

I think that with the exception of 9/18, the '74 European shows all pretty much suck. But other folks here get some enjoyment from 9/11 and 9/20. I rerely listen to that junk, but you'll probably be happy with those two performances of Eyes of the World.

thanks cliff, i will have to check all these out.

from 6/23 i have the Dark Star Jam>Spanish Jam> U.S. Blues that's included on SMR. the Let It Rock is a Mars Hotel Bonus track. I guess I never grabbed that one 'cause i figured i had the best part of the show already, haha.

You need all of 6-23. The intro jam into Ship of Fools to open the second set is also very cool. While you are hanging out at the Fronton, don't forget the less heralded night before. An overlooked show because 6-23 is such a monster. Some argue that its better than 6-23. I wouldn't go that far but it doesn't suck.

My mistake! Yeah, I would definately want to have that show in its entirety.

You might want to grab 9/21 as well, for the uniquely jammed Playin' in the Band.

Outside your criteria, and you may already be familiar with it, but 6th December 1973 may have a lot of what you seek. A China/Rider to match the 24/2 giant, and the longest (?) Dark Star of that era. 1974 starts here http://www.archive.org/details/gd73-12-06.sbd.kaplan-fink-hamilton.4452.sbeok.shnf

yessss snori, that one is a staple of my collection. of course the Dark Star>Eyes>China is wonderful, but the HCS is one of my favorite GD moments ever. epic jerry jams in that one.
